EasyJet, Air Berlin and Ryan Air have all been touted as being the airlines most likely to be offering direct flights from the Uk to Calabria however it appears that Ryan Air, once again, are the company most likely to pick up the mantle although we understand that EasyJet have also had recent dicussions.
Calabria is still something of a fledgling destination for UK travellers, but one that has been steadily growing in profile and popularity over the last 2 years. The direct flights that Ryan Air were supplying( 2 or 3 per week each way) always appeared full. In previous years Ryan Air has discontinued flights for a period over the winter period...with flights generally resuming from April onwards, however with todays climate nothing is guaranteed.
Fortunately, with regards travelling to Calabria from the UK - in the absense of direct UK flights into Lamezia - the situation is not too bad.
Calabria is extremely popular with Italians, Germans and Scandanavians and there are many low cost flights into Lamezia, Crotone & Reggio Calabria aiports that are easily accessed via Rome or Milan. It's also possbible to fly directly into Bari or Sciliy which are both only a short distance away.
With the resources that are being spent on Southern Italy and Calabria on infra-structure and for general touristic development the future outlook is still very bright for great direct connections - this is an emerging destination and the current situation is one to be expected - the increasing interest of a number of airlines in the route bodes well for the future. In the meantime we will keep abreast of the latest developments so as to keep our clients informed, so check back for all updates.
